TBH, I think many on the left put the working class on a pedestal since they were such a key part of the New Deal coalition and indeed many can relate to them or had parents or grandparents that were. I don’t mind. I just think we need to realize that many of these people do have prejudices on things that have nothing to do with economics and people like Trump can and certainly do exploit them.

Someone who can assure people that he has all the answers, and can make them quick and off-the-cuff, will fool a large number of people that it really is that easy. Too many Mexicans? Build a wall. Too many Muslims? Ship them out. Too many jobs going overseas? Punish the companies. Foreign defense too expensive? Make those deadbeat countries pay for our services. Anyone with half a brain could see through that as total bullshit — a salesman’s patter to butter up the marks — but sadly it seems there are about 60 million Americans with only 30 million brains among them.
