re: #86 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
SSI is not citizenship, but it is at least proof of legal residence. And the logistics of such a thing are small compared to the cost of building an artificial barrier across thousands of miles of desert and rough terrain.
And anyone who complains about illegal immigration, voter fraud or social service abuse needs to shut the fuck up about a simple solution used by nearly every other civilized nation in the world. In Germany, it is impossible to open a bank account, register a car, enroll a child in school or even sign a lease or employment contract without presenting proof of legal residence.
I should have been more clear, between the SSI and green card systems, we have the basis for a national ID system. But as I said, there’s always pushback to any sort of national ID card
