It’s a narcissist thing, whether clinical or just lower-case n.

Beliefs exist to exalt the self. Everything else is negotiable. When the choice is telling a story that serves the former, previous stories are shed like a gecko tail.

This is how people can be cynics and idealists at once. This explains cult leaders, the incoherence-yet-vehemence of the NSDAP, and even individuals that oscillate from extreme belief to extreme belief. Ideas don’t exist outside the self-serving calculation.

I grew up watching this. My dad did it all the time, in extreme, fucking crazy ways, where the only consistent trend was (1) he was axiomatically correct and disagreement was inherently wrong and Wrong.

It’s like the idea of “not even wrong” that’s used in discussion of skepticism and empiriticsm: “not even hypocritical” because hypocrisy requires self-awareness.
