I noticed as a kid that several American WW2 films, including Casablanca and Sahara specifically mentioned characters fighting the fascists in Spain as significant points.
Franco was bad business and we knew it at the time.
Well, after WWII, ‘Premature anti-fascist’ became a code word for ‘Dirty, stinking Commie!’ More than a few Americans were never comfortable fighting the Nazis.
