I’ve a friend from high school that went to grad school at Columbia. One of the things he told me years ago was that the Ivy League school (and I think this holds true for most prestigious universities) will protect students once they’re in. They want to keep that graduation rate high, so they’ll go out of their way to make sure you finish with decent grades.

State schools with good degree programs tend to be the opposite. Frequently they are obliged to admit anyone from their home state that can fog a mirror, and the resulting culling in classes like freshman calculus and physics can be horrific.
