The Chinese government has discouraged these, lest restless natives get any ideas to recreate the May 4th Movement. It’s been suggested the government gave us a long holiday weekend to encourage travel and discourage celebrations of May 4.

The 30th anniversary of the Tian’anmen Square protests comes up on June 4. That’s another anniversary the government would prefer no one remember.

Interesting. Makes sense not to encourage what can get out of control. I think they regretted promoting anti-Japanese protests over the Diaoyu/Senkaku dispute when things got too heated.
