We were on the receiving end of a lightning strike in the back yard a few years ago, maybe 200 feet away, tops. It sounded like a bomb going off - which, given the damage, it pretty much was. The next morning, there was 3/4 of a tree laying in our yard, along with a bunch of wood shards.
