re: #88 steve_davis

we have tremendous spread amongst college students on campus, but i’m not hearing horror stories about the level of community spread. It could be because this is a university town and the residents are educated enough to wear a damned mask when out and about.

We went months with no cases while Covid-19 raged in New Jersey, New York, and Washington. Because of the bulkshite coming out of the White House coupled with the general complacency around here (it won’t come here, we’re a rural area and don’t have much tourism), when it did get here it took people by surprise. (Not clinics, hospitals, and public health directors though: they were aware what was going to happen. They were faced with a state government actively working against them.)

Our local media (newspapers and radio especially) reported the pandemic as it tore across the world fairly straightforward, though to me it seemed they didn’t emphasise sufficiently that out here on the High unpopulated Plains, we weren’t immune from it, we would only be delayed.

Toss the burning tire fires that were Trump’s Mount Rushmore fireworks display followed by the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and things really got going.

By the time those happened though, it had already been brought here from Colorado, probably by hunters or campers.
