I wonder if the situation with Obama and the Iran nuke alarmists (including Netanyahu) might mirror the one that constituted the background to President Eisenhower’s famous military industrial complex speech.

All through his second term, Eisenhower had faced a deafening chorus of criticism from defense hawks in Congress. These tools alleged that the administration had allowed the US to fall far behind the Soviets in military capability, first with the bomber gap, and later the missile gap, with all kinds of lurid tales in between. In 1958, for example, a hawk congressman alleged that the Soviets already had 1000 operational ICBMs. In fact, they had none at that point, and they only had seven vulnerable and clumsy ones by the time US ICBMs became operational the following year.

Eisenhower knew that the hawks’ claims were utter bullshit, drummed up by defense contractors and their many lobbyists and captive congressmen. He had to suffer in silence, though, because his sources (U-2 overflights and highly placed moles) were so sensitive he could not even hint at their existence until late in his term, when the Soviets revealed the first source, the U-2, for him.

We know that Bibi has been beating the alarmist drum for many years, claiming repeatedly that Iran was right on the verge of having an operational nuclear weapon. Hawks in this country, now with ideological and religious rather than financial motives, have joined him in this.

Yet Obama, like President Bush before him, refuses to take action. Have both of these very different presidents known categorically, from sources they can’t discuss, that the alarmists are wrong and possibly lying on purpose?
