My dad has a bunch of books on military hardware dating from the mid to late-80s, and reading them 30+ years later is always a hoot, if for no other reason than to see all the guesstimates about the capabilities of late Cold-War Soviet hardware compared to its Western counterparts.

And I am sure a lot of it was tweaked, ostensibly to “err on the side of safety” but mostly to assure that our own military was going to receive a steady flow of funding.
