I preferred Dubliners. Had a hard time getting in to Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man. I like Joyce and appreciate his influence and I even have used it a little in my own short stories but sometimes he’s a big chore. I much prefer reading Hemingway and Fitzgerald.
I had a goal at one time of reading at least one book from every author. I read the Dubliners, and decided that since it was good, I would also read Portrait. Barely. Made. It. Through.
I had the same experience when reading World According to Garp (great), and a Prayer for Owen Meany (just not interesting to me).
