Boy, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard/read that.

The folks on the up side of privilege can’t see it, or perhaps more accurately WON’T see it. I got into a discussion of this with a guy on another forum, when I said, ‘Yeah, we’re both doing well, but we’ve been fortunate.’

He INSISTED he hadn’t been fortunate, that everything was all his own hard work!

Of course, it turned out his parents paid for him to go to college, and helped with Law School. And that’s not even touching on white privilege, just economic privilege.

I mean I don’t doubt your aquaintence worked hard but it drives me nuts when people think it’s their hard work alone that is why they are where they are.
