Remember that we area also competing with international companies whose environmental, safety and health standards are lax or unenforced. In doing so, we are shooting ourselves in the foot: not only are we losing jobs to companies who do not have to incur these costs, but we are giving them little or no incentive to clean up their act.

If only there were some international agreements and systems of sanctions to disincentivize trading partners who take the low road on safety and the environment…
