Graham is 63, and while he’s up again in 2020, last time he won 54-38 in the general (and wasn’t really challenged in the primary). He could have this gig for another 30 years, if he really wanted to. Why go be Secretary of Defense for Trump of all presidents?

Oh I don’t know about that. Have you seen the about-face Graham has made shortly after Mccain died? I mean, might be that that was the one factor holding up his (pretense of a) spine, but TBH given the enthousiasm with which he’s turned trumpist frankly I’m going with the theory there’s both a live boy and a dead girl and something probably much worse someone’s got over him, and since that wouldn’t be going away any more ever again I’m fairly sure he’s going to fade away in a few years and hope he can live out his years in quiet.
Maybe I’m wrong, but I really don’t think Graham will be around in 10 years time.
OTOH taking secdef wouldn’t exactly be the most risk-averse move either so he might well stay put under my theory just the same.
