Actually, one word: legacy. There are/were a crapload of independent specialized programming companies that write software specifically for a company, meant to do a very particular task. To save programming time they’ll frequently use existing systems for something - in this example IE6 as the specifically cued display. Then because they’re using it in dedicated fashion they’ll hit all the special codes for speed and control and such.

A company that drops several thousand dollars for a program that does exactly what they want does not want to have to redo the program a couple of years later.

I know I keep hitting the M$ fanboy button. But this is another example of why M$ dominates most businesses. Most companies don’t need the newest and shiniest for operations.

Labs in our research building were running Win95 machines still a few years back for exactly that reason - very specific support programs. Said machines were not allowed near the network however.

We are having browser issues now since the current browser compliant with our multinational intranet is IE8. Might move to IE9 shortly. A lot of users are getting Firefox installs on the side for using with external websites.
