Try explaining the concept of traveler’s cheques to Chinese ESL students sometime. Even the concept of a cheque is a mystery to them.

I remember the odd stares I got here in Germany when I went to the bank and wanted to open up a checking account.

Most everything is done by bank transfer. They used to have Eurocheques, but those were more like traveler’s checks and have disappeared from common use. The only thing one sees occasionally is a cashier’s check.
