A lot of humor goes around several corners to make a point. Recall that the original lyrics to the Beatles’ “Get Back” were directed at Pakistani immigrants…this was a satirical reaction to UK bigots like Enoch “Rivers of Blood” Powell. But the Beatles changed the lyrics because they understood that much of their audience would not get the nuance and take it as a literal attack on foreigners.

Was that PC self-censorship? No, it was just being a bit sensitive and aware of consequences, even unintended ones.

Recall that when Archie Bunker (based on a British TV character) makes fun of minorities, we are actually laughing at his bigotry, not the blacks or Asians…and when Brits make fun of Germans getting up early to reserve the sun beds at the resort, they are also making indirect fun of the fact that British tourists are too hung over to move before noon…
