I’m just spitballing here, but wouldn’t it be better for the economy if we address the underlying problem (pandemic) than to just try to shore up the markets?
This is like having a 2 story house with a fire on the first floor and trying to protect stuff on the second floor from smoke damage without addressing the fact that the house is on fire.

The Administration is treating the issue as a political problem. And chosen to take a course that “fixing” the market is the solution since Trump’s apparently lone accomplishment in his term was benefiting from a bull market that carried in from the previous administration. Plus, at this point, trying to address it as a country-wide health issue will be admitting to a number of grievous errors in the previous few years on that front as well as admitting a complete case of flailing ineptitude* in the past few months as this crisis formed.

* - Ineptitude piled on top of continued brazen lying about what might come to pass.
