I didn’t know about the abortion clinic bomber questions, but I was uneasy with many of Palin’s views. I defended her because she was such an immediate target for the hypocrisy and distortions of the enemy media, which went far beyond any real concerns into outright slander and fabrication. To this day, a likely majority of Americans think it was Palin herself who actually said she could see Russia from her house. It doesn’t help that so much of the geographically illiterate electorate is unaware that Palin’s real statement, that you can see Russia from parts of Alaska, is literally and factually true.

McCain himself made some pretty stupid anti-science comments, most notably his outrageous characterization of an earmarked planetarium projector as an “overhead projector,” trying to confuse a genuinely (and justifiably) expensive scientific device with a commonplace office machine.
