As I said, if you can show me something that castigates the Sri Lanken government’s prosecution of that, I’d be happy to read it.

My knowledge of the conflict is that it began with Sri Lanken repression of the Tamil minority, but not violently, and that the Tigers were the first to resort to violence.

Furthermore, in an odd symmetry, there was a negotiated ceasefire and a deal for Sri Lanka to grant the Tamils limited autonomy, which was rejected by the Tigers in the form of armed resistance. They continued to reject anything short of outright independence, even after the Sri Lanken government made concessions. They have also assasinated many, many moderate Tamils who opposed them.

I think that the conflict there approaches ‘civil war’ more than just an insurgency, by the way, not that its an important distinction.
