I just finished, again, Thomas Pynchon’s Mason & Dixon and, historically speaking, it wasn’t that long ago that Philadelphia marked the boundary between civilization and the wilderness. The US westward expansion was a bit more than a montage.

Yeah Western Pa I’d say before the Lewis-Clark expedition was out there. I found out when I did my tree that my Gx4 Grandparents emigrated to Pa in around the mid 1790’s from Alsace. Looks like they were near Philly for a little while before they headed west since one of my great great great uncles is listed as being born fairly near Philly. I wonder what drew them west. I really had no idea about there being a French connection. I had thought that side was exclusively Irish. I doubt even my grandmother knew.
