âThey werenât buying what he was sellingâ: Wayne LaPierre ***stopped speech to ask young conservatives why they werenât cheering***https://t.co/cpUkhLgAIe#BoycottNRAâ The Hummingbird đŚ (@SaysHummingbird) February 23, 2018
âHe was stoking these fears not just of Second Amendment infringements, but of trampling and confiscation of individual liberties across the board,â said reporter Jeremy Peters. âThatâs what he said, and itâs an interesting shift in strategy for a group like the NRA which no longer has a president in the White House to demean and to demonize and to make an enemy of, so what theyâve done is theyâve said, âOkay, thereâs a much broader conspiracy â itâs no longer coming just from the Democrats, itâs coming from the media, itâs coming from the intel community, itâs coming from the government and they are going to get you, and the ultimate goal is to take your guns.ââ
But the speech didnât seem to go over well with younger conservative activists, Peters said, prompting LaPierre to re-enact Jeb Bushâs infamous âplease clapâ moment.
âThe room was not with Wayne LaPierre yesterday,â Peters said. âActually, at one point he stopped and he said, âI sense itâs a little quiet out there.â It was quiet, he said, because they must be scared and all gun owners should be. But the reason they were quiet is because they werenât buying what he was selling.â
