Germany’s President is elected by the Legislature but the choice is supposed to be non-partisan, preferably involving a non-politician who is well regarded by the public as a whole.
They even elected a career politician a few years back, Christian Wulff, who was later involved in an influence-peddling scandal, a relatively minor matter compared to our current US President, but nonetheless had to resign in disgrace.
