Speaking of cults, the Russian police swept in and arrested Sergei Torop aka Vissarion, who, for the last three decades has claimed he is Jesus. Torop lived at a commune in Siberia, near Krasnoyarsk.
This being Russia, I suspect that while some of the charges may be true, the whole “organising an illegal religious organisation” has more to do with the Russian Orthodox Church trying to eliminate competition, as similar charges have been brought against Scientology and the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia. And given our extreme deference to churches (see: First Amendment) it’s not something that would happen here.
Scientology is a cult and an extremely dangerous one at that. In 100 years it might shed its beginnings, but there’s nothing honest about the organization.
