New Peace Talks Imminent

FWIW, it isn’t like Netanyahu had led anyone to think he’d compromise. His whole thing about “no preconditions” was repeated over and over and Abbas could not even get an agenda negotiated because the agenda would be a “precondition”.

So the article snip that Charles posted ends with “Hale acknowledged, however, that details of the talks — announced to great fanfare today — have yet to be finalized.”

Holding a summit or talks on Israel/Palestine is a sort of effort designed to create the illusion of progress when in fact it simply creates a new set of opportunities for the antagonists to antagonize each other. Both sides know this and go along with American presidents who have allowed themselves to be flattered into thinking that the peace can be won by said president’s special skills or unique insights. Both sides know American aid flows when they agree to these get togethers and both sides know that, even if they wanted to do a deal, there are enough people with competing agendas back home to prevent any such thing from happening.

Which modern president has not fallen for this? Which one can point to discernible “progress” in the last 50 years? Progress in terms we would have signed up to in the beginning? The US keeps signing up for this and I see little that we get out of it except that Israel manages to survive.
