I think the South could have given up slavery without bloodshed, or at least, without a war. I don’t think it was inevitable.

I don’t know, a lot of the South had been bitching about the industrialized North since the American System and Andrew Jackson’s “Tariff of Abominations.” Slavery was the central issue, and Lincoln’s election sealed the deal for secession, but I think the South was just looking for an excuse at that point.
