There’s a very simple, fair way to allocate districts mathematically that ensures they have equal population without regard to the distribution of political affiliations. Look up “Voronoi Diagrams” if you’re interested. It completely removes partisan tinkering from such matters. If such a scheme were adopted, districts would be redrawn with each population tally - every ten years, coupled to the census. This removes districting even further from the political realm.

All of this is another thing that is never, ever going to happen.

I like your description of the proper way to allocate districts. And while the cynical part of me understands your last statement, I think that cynicism should’t override fighting for what’s right. And manipulation of these districts is precisely that, manipulation to get a predetermined outcome. That idea needs to be fought.
