re: #89 WhatEVs

So I’m starting to get a bit bent out of shape. Am I being silly?

There’s new stories about Ashley Madison daily. The RCMP along with the FBI and Homeland Security (!!) are investigating. It’s, as Biden once famously said, a big fucking deal.

Why is this a bigger deal than the Target breach? Or BoA? I get it’s salacious. And sex sells (or doesn’t if you’ve read the latest info on marketing, but I digress).

Is this a bigger fucking deal than Target or BoA because it impacts mostly men? Is it that’s it’s affecting some powerful men? Am I being over sensitive?

Reality check me, please.

Mostly because of this:

I am from a country where homosexuality carries the death penalty. I studied in America the last several years and used Ashley Madison during that time. I was single, but used it because I am gay; gay sex is punishable by death in my home country so I wanted to keep my hookups extremely discreet. I only used AM to hook up with single guys.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SHARE THIS MESSAGE. I AM ABOUT TO BE KILLED, TORTURED, OR EXILED. AND I DID NOTHING WRONG. STOP THE HACK. EVEN IF ADULTERERS DESERVE IT I DO NOT. I AM BEING HONEST AND CAN PROVE IT IF YOU REFER TO ME A JOURNALIST/GOVERNMENT BODY THAT WILL ALLOW ME TO CORROBORATE MY STORY WITHOUT COMPROMISING MY IDENTITY.

Even if this particular guy isn’t legit, and I tend to think he is, the potential for people to literally lose their lives over this hack is real. It’s a fucked up world and actions like releasing the AM hack data are egregiously irresponsible.
