I hear you. My favorites to watch with John were Kim Possible, Transformers Animated & Avatar: The Last Airbender. Lots of stories with far more depth and teaching that people realize at first. I made a comment to him recently about stories teaching a gentle model of leadership and he twigged on why I liked him watching that version of Transformers.

This is what was firing my imagination when I was about six:

Space Battleship Yamato - Isao Sasaki (with Japanese, Romaji and English subtitle)

The animation isn’t the original, unfortunately. But the music is instantly recognizable. Hard to believe that was 40+ years ago.
