Fake Outrage of the Weekend: Dan Savage, the 'Vile Anti-Christian Bully'

re: #73 Killgore Trout

The only aspect of the outrage that I do find interesting is that the organizers are supporting Savage. Good for them, I like to see that. They knew who he was when they hired him and they aren’t going to throw him under the bus. However, those journalism students are probably not going to get the same when they get out into the real world. Once the special interest groups start spamming their employers over some outrageous outrage there’s a good chance they’re going to be looking for a new job.

First, these are high school journalists. Most of them will probably never be working commercial journalists.

Second, the idea that people will identify them and refuse to hire them over this seems farfetched to me, although I can hypothetically see asking the question of one of them: “If I send you to report on something, and the speaker says something you find offensive, are you gonna walk out, or bring me back the story?”

My guess: most of them won’t become journalists, and will major in something else. Some of the remaining ones will become good journalists, having grown up a little (by which, BTW, I do not mean that they will abandon Christianity). A few will probably be offered jobs immediately at quasi-news organizations whose political and social views coincide with theirs, there they will be feted as brave young thinkers, and encouraged to go on doing this kind of thing as adults.

Dan Savage will go on to write more books, and his son will write a book shortly after he finishes college which I will buy in hard-cover because, hey, it’s D.J.

Thems my predictions.
