I’ve been fact checking my own memory recently. In particular, I have had the impression for many years that many paranoid conspiracy theories originated in the drug culture in the 60s and 70s and migrated from there to fundamentalist Christianity. I haven’t collected all the data I want, but early indications seem to confirm my impression. The specific vector was the very large effort by various evangelists to co-opt the counterculture during that period. Jesus Movement

This strain of conspiracism eventually worked its way into the Evangelical mainstream where it melded into the established Birch/McCarthy style of conspiracism, creating the right wing conspiracy culture we know and loathe today. The drug culture tended to provide specific claims while Birch/McCarthy provided the style and underlying worldview.
