re: #86 Romantic Heretic
Thatâs because many people, probably most, do not understand democracy and when they do they donât like it very much. They think democracy is about âwinningâ, winning power specifically, and respond to promises of it.
The other side knows that democracy is about balance, which means you donât get your own way all the time. This puts them at a distinct disadvantage against the authoritarians and barbarians masquerading as conservatives.
The results are Brexit, Trump, Orban etc.
- Political parties lead to divisiveness, and they should
- If we have honest disagreements, arguments are good
- Arguments are good only if they lead to statesmanship, or itâs just theater
- Statesmanship *is* compromise

Also
Ben Franklin thought the only hope for democracy was if people respected each other enough to compromise
whatâs going on with some of these lame duck maneuvers is more proof positive that one side and only one side is abdicating its position in this process
they think theyâre solidifying it. ultimately the curtain will be drawn back and they will lose it all
