The real Republican base, the hinterland gentry, is not stupid. Their low-class dupes are but the local elitists themselves know that objective reality, in the form of demographic change, dooms their long-standing privilege. Generational decay, fed by poor, culturally embedded reproductive choices and bad child-rearing, is also a factor. They have no choice, therefore, but to try to create an alternate reality and to grab enough power to make it real. It is a desperate gamble but they have no choice, and we may expect a very hard struggle before they are defeated and consigned to the dust-bin of social history.

I’d agree with your assessment. And inevitably, they’re going to arrive at that moment of worldview death, when it all comes crashing down and there’s nothing more they can do to prevent it or forestall it.

And that’s when things are gonna get potentially scary, as I have little doubt that some of them will violently lash out as their world crumbles all around them.
