He created a world in which beings of all races and species co-operate towards a common goal while still maintaining their identity and individuality. That was a noble ideal and of of the underlying things that made his stories and characters endure.
It is a noble ideal. It just makes for poor story-telling unless your story is either about how that ideal is unrealistic or highlighting the perils that occur when persons/races fail to live up to it.
