I think we just gotta keep on trying. It does suck because I really do greatly admire the values of especially the Hispanic community, I’ve seen it with my own eyes how my brother’s in laws and extended family welcomed my brother into their extended family. I feel so bad at their gatherings because even my SiL’s cousins know me by name and I feel bad because I don’t know names. We’re fairly tight knit too but it’s not like my Mom’s cousins know my Dad or vice versa.

Societal inertia is one of the hardest things to dislodge. If you have been told you are a dog, and treated like a bad dog for generations, it’s hard to get your mind around the fact that you might be a good dog, or maybe even a real human. This is the real condition for black and brown communities in this country. It’s a national shame.
