My granddad (or the guys on Ellis Island) changed the spelling of the family name, replacing the cz in the original with a ch, like in “church”

Problem came when I returned to Germany where the ch has a guttural pronounciation (like Channukah). I am used to just spelling it out as Germans never get it right.

I even recall a woman saying “How do you expect me to spell it when you don’t pronounce it correctly?”
