We went camping up in the mountains of Colorado this year at the height of the Perseids meteor shower. No tent, just an air mattress and some really great sleeping bags. Dogs on the bed with us, looking up at ALL THE STARS, and watching meteors shoot by every minute or so. No light pollution at all, we were 40 miles or more from the nearest (small) town.

It was amazing. I was awake most of the night because I couldn’t take my eyes off the sky.

First time I ever saw the Milky Way with my own eyes was camping in upstate NY. Never occurred to me how much the light pollution from Philly was obscuring the stars in the sky. Absolutely amazing.
