A crude estimate I just did shows that splitting EVs in OH, PA, VA and WI in 2012 would have taken 26 EVs from Obama and given them to Romney, for a net GOP gain of 52. Not enough to change the result in 2012, but that was actually a very bad presidential election for the GOP.

So this EV trick could make a difference in closer races.

Okay, but that just means that the EC would almost exactly match the popular vote. As it stands now there’s a huge Dem advantage built into the EC, with Nate Silver pointing out that Obama would have won if he’d lost the popular vote by 2 to 3 percentage points, assuming all state votes totals shifted equally. Before we start screaming about how unfair what the GOP is attempting is we should probably acknowledge that as it stands now there’s a fundamentally anti-(small d)emocratic bias to the current EC structure that tilts in the Democratic Party’s favor.

The fairest and most obvious solution is to kill off the EC entirely go with the popular vote winner.
