Much as I admire what the EU does and what it stands for, it has managed to give itself the image of an elitist body that has little direct contact to or interest in the people it is supposed to represent. There are elections, but very few people vote and even fewer are aware of the candidates or the issues.

You mean the European MP elections, I suppose? True enough — but it is primarily because we trust (rightly or wrongly) our national government to see to things. In national elections participation hovers around 80%.
