We have at least 30% of this country that doesn’t reside anywhere near reality. They’re our relatives, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc.

We’ve always had them though. The difference today is an Internet that allows us an instant view into the crazy. Before we had the John Birch Society (well, they’re still around), the Know Nothings, &c.
