MLK Birthday was another nadir of Arizona politics.

It was put to a referendum and rejected, as a result of which Arizona lost a lot of convention business along with the Fiesta Bowl, and finally reconsidered.

At which point, a friend of mine who worked for a bank was told that to make up for the MLK holiday, they had to work on July 4th…

It was the Super Bowl that was lost. NFL made it known the SB would be moved if voters rejected MLK Day. This, unfortunately, gave a bunch of racist fuckheads a fig leaf to say “I’m not against an MLK Holiday. I just refuse to be extorted by the NFL!”
