Marriage is a legal contract. It gives you responsibility for another person’s life. It gives you another person’s stuff (houses, cars, etc.). There are legal benefits to marriage that are huge.

Right, I’m in favor of civil unions providing all those benefits. Just don’t change the meaning of marriage after thousands of years.
