Hence your idea’s merit, holding the vote after Boehner is voted back in as Speaker. It would still only work if he can be somewhat assured he would be thrown out. If it looks like he’d lose his Speakership, then he’ll just hold firm.

I don’t expect to see a quick resolution to this. If anything, I think it might be of more assurance to the market if both parties announced that they would not make any deal until after Jan 1st, with the final deal set to take effect retroactively. Avoid the pressure of a deadline, the pressure of a market scared witless that nothing will be accomplished, and also the pressure by the party faithful on both sides not to waver under the pressure of the first two.
