The reason for Southern Democrats was the fact that no Republican could expect to be elected in a southern state due to the “stigma” of Lincoln. It took Lee Atwater and his “southern strategy” to overgcome that “flaw” in the party’s appeal. Ronald Reagan finally made it acceptable to be Southern and GOP.
