I honestly thought that Trump’s attacks on McCain would do him in. I get that McCain isn’t beloved with the base but attacking a POW especially by a guy like Trump who didn’t serve I thought would be a bridge too far for GOP voters. I guess not. It’s funny because outside of Mexican-Americans, I don’t like any of the people Trump has attacked but his comments on McCain were indefensible and his comments on Kelly equally so.

Also, however, is the fact that McCain lost. And in the mind-set of a large set of the GOP, if you lost you’re a loser and deserve the grief. Just like Dole. Or Papa Bush.

As I said above, the only reason Romney got a second swing is because the base was torn between so many choices.
