Maybe, but a violent conflict can begin by tacitly encouraging your lunatic fringe, too. Us Lefties learned that in the 60’s. If you have a cancer in your midst, cut it out. It gave us Nixon, if you recall.

If they don’t, and the nuttiest of the wingnuts kill a few people, the R’s lose the middle for a long-ass time for not denouncing them and purging them when they had the chance. Guilt by association? Maybe. But also guilt by encouragement through your media surrogates.

I agree. Right now, the GOP is a rudderless ship and is still reeling from November 2008. In their state of disorientation, the Republicans made the mistake of embracing (or perhaps not denouncing) extreme elements because they had certain things in common, such as fear/hatred of Obama. We have seen something similar in the blogosphere, although LGF is a notable exception. As we move closer to November 2010, the mature leaders in the GOP (and they do exist) are going to have to wrest control of the party back from the fringe elements or they will not win any national elections for a long time. The GOP needs a 21st century version of William F. Buckley.
