So Sofia just got clocked. But it didn’t happen near Turkey, which could have been a catastrophe. Because Istanbul has alot of unauthorized construction. An earthquake of strength there would be catastrophic. Also, the elderly monuments could have trouble.

It’s not just the unauthorized construction, its the ability of builders to avoid earthquake safety standards. Los Angeles would be far less damaged by a significant quake, because the rules are enforced and builders who do skirt them can be sued. In Turkey, the courts are corrupt, which means that well-connected builders simply skate without punishment.
