re: #94 Tars Tarkas

I thought it was very entertaining and if anything didn’t show the horrors of slavery enough. Like most Tarantino flicks I’m having to rewatch some of the films he referenced just to see how much he lifted wholesale. I did think Basterds was a better film because it weaved together several revenge arcs into a whole with an almost supernatural air (thanks to the movie playing), while Django was just one story that ends with a smaller spectacle. I did think it was more satisfying than Basterds. DiCaprio was awesome, his relationship with Jackson’s character had to many layers they just hinted at, and it made it better.

I thought he did the best job he could at showing the reality of slavery while keeping it possible for the audience to actually enjoy the movie. Too much more and it would have been a total downer. I really liked how he showed the poor whites as very much illiterate serfs themselves. Many people don’t really realize the feifdom’s many plantations owners created.

I had a hard time with Basterds. It’s a topic I am very queezy about. Alternative histories usually bother me. But Django didn’t for some reason.
