And not only were WE fighting the Japanese - the Soviets (thanks to some lucky breaks they fought out in Manchuria in 1939) were not. Well, not until they opportunistically jumped in way late in the war. It’s an interesting alt-history to speculate on how the Pacific War would have played out if the USSR had gone all-in against Japan earlier on.

Or if Japan had managed a win at Nomonhan.
