re: #53 Killgore Trout

Either way, could you imagine AIG going to the supreme court to sue the American tax payers to pay their outrageous bonuses? I think conservatives are making a very bad mistake defending these creeps who ran the economy into the ground and now we’re expected to give them outrageous bonuses for doing it? It’s insanity.

Geithner: Treas. expressed concerns to Dodd

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner acknowledged Thursday that his department “expressed concern” to Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) that a provision concerning bonuses in the stimulus bill could prompt lawsuits from workers at bailed-out companies—a measure at the heart of this week’s AIG bonus controversy.

Already under fire for his handling of the issue, Geithner said Treasury officials spoke with Dodd about the measure. The language that was then substituted in the bill allowed the controversial AIG bonuses to go forward.

A.I.G. sues U.S. government for return of $306 million in tax payments

While the American International Group comes under fire from Congress over executive bonuses, it is quietly fighting the U.S. government for the return of $306 million in tax payments, some related to deals that were conducted through offshore tax havens.

A.I.G. sued the government last month in a bid to force it to return the payments, which stemmed in large part from its use of aggressive tax deals, some involving entities controlled by the company’s financial products unit in the Cayman Islands, Ireland, the Dutch Antilles and other offshore havens.
